Tornado watches! Lightning and thunder! That’s what’s happening in NYC tonight, which is how my flight home from JFK got cancelled. After an 8-hour flight from Helsinki, I had to scrounge for a hotel room, and just managed to snag one for the night. I’ve given up on flying home. Forget the airlines. Tomorrow, I’m catching a train to Boston.

Tess, I admire your travel to Finland. I first heard of your books and experiences while listening to John Moore on CFRB Radio in Toronto, Ontario. My wife is wanting to know when your next book will be available? Will this be the one about the medical practice of the 1830’s? I remember watching an article on TV based on the time frame when the Hospital would ring loud bells to drown out the screams of the person having surgery. Sounds interesting, don’t know if there was any truth to it. I will try and source it on the Internet. All the best in your career and keep up the excellant work.

There is nothing quite like lightning and thunder while on board an aircraft. I’m certain you’ll enjoy the train ride more.

Reminds me of a strange experience I had in Arizona in June 1992. Took a flight from Scottsdale to the Grand Canyon, it was a small plane with perhaps 40 people on board, all seats taken. On the way back we flew through an almighty thunderstorm that was so violent I thought it would shake the wings off. Several people were screaming and being sick. Anyway we made it back OK.
That wasn’t the weird bit though. As we arrived back in the airport terminal I mentioned the experience to a member of ground staff who said, quite matter-of-factly, that about a week earlier a small plane on a similar trip was caught up in a violent thunderstorm near the Canyon….and it crashed, killing everyone on board.
Kind of made me think.

Yeah, that’s one of the worst things about flying! As much as I love it, it’s a real pain in the butt sometimes! I’m going to the MWC on Thursday, and I’m kind of looking forward to the flight… I just hope it goes smoothly!
Ooh, I took the train from Boston to Newark once, and it was actually really nice. You get 4 1/2 hours to relax and read/think/write… Enjoy it!

Struggler, I would warn anyone from taking a tour plane or helicopter over the Grand Canyon. It’s one of the most dangerous places to fly, with crashes happening there quite freequently.

Unfortunately, we can’t tell what Mother Nature is going to throw at us. As a lifelong resident of NY, this month alone we’ve had a tornado touch down, a few hail storms and an abundant amount of thunderstorms, and it’s only August 18th. Oh, well, I guess it’s true what they say about the weather….it’s always up in the air. Hope you got home safely.

My daughter recently visited from Pittsburgh-both times the New York changeover was a nightmare,resulting in 12 hour trips each way-she could’ve flown to Amsterdam and halfway back each time.
And her luggage got left in Pittsburgh on the way up..She flew delta.My son in law is a pilot and he said Delta stands for:”don’t expect luggage to arrive”
