Read my latest interview

I talk about the genre, how I approach a story, and about literary vs. popular fiction. It’s over on the web page “The Crime of it All.”

Very interesting interview. I especially agree with your comment about how great stories can be told in a direct and clear way. I admit that I’m not familiar with Han Yu, but it sounds like he was definitely onto something, because I can think of two classic books that are brilliant yet very easy to read:

    1. Animal Farm by George Orwell – Even as a relatively short book without fancy language, it still manages to be a clever story about animals that illustrates communism.

    2. The Art of War by Sun Tzu – It’s the oldest military strategy manual ever written (as far as I know) with short lines spanning fewer than 100 pages, yet it applies to so many wars throughout human history.

    Dr. Gerritsen,
My wife & I just finished listening to the unabridged audio version of Ice Cold and thoroughly enjoyed it. However, we have some questions that may have been addressed in the bound version. We would appreciate your comments.
    1) What happened to Doug after he left Kingdom Come to get help?
    2) Who killed Doug, Grace, Elaine, & Arlo and by what method? The X-rays of Elaine’s corpse failed to ID any gunshot evidence which would have implicated Loftis or deputy Martineau.
    3) Who was driving the snow plow when Maura was abducted by Julian?
    4) Were there any adult males in the mass grave in Kingdom Come and, if not, what happened to the males?
    5) Who was the arsonist(s) for Kingdom Come?

Thanks for your consideration in clarifying these questions.

JWW, the problem is, those are big spoilers that I’m reluctant to address here. So if you haven’t read the book, don’t look any further.

    But to answer the questions:

    1. He was caught by those who did the cover-up of what really happened in Kingdom Come.
    2. The same people (company) as above. Killing doesn’t require a gunshot. Head fractures on X-ray should be a clue.
    3. See above.
    4. Yes. There were males.
    5. See #1.

OMG! I just finished reading “ICE COLD” and I must tell you-I was waiting to pick my son up from school, when I got to the part in the story-where Maura and Julian are confronted by Montgomery and what happened next, had me screaming “Yes!” and throwing my hands up in the air. I swear it was happening right in front of my eyes. Well done,it kept me totally engrossed to the end. I finished your book in 6 hours. Thanks for a action packed mystery that delivered a great ending or continuation for another story?

Such a pity that Maura decided to leave Daniel! Yes, her life was difficult with him, but they love each other… Me relation with man who coudn’t be my husband lasted ten years and I didn’t regret about it – not only day… Now I am married and love my husband, but I can’t stop love that man too… I understand that such realtion aren’t politically correct, but it is life and love…

I want to thank you, Tess for your great books. At first I read them in Russian, but I had to wait of translation so long that I began to look them in English too. Bone Garden, Keepsake and Ice Cold I found in hotels on Crete – we were in one place three years and every year I found there your books – it was gif of destiny, I think. But I’ve bought all of them for my family – we all like your books very much. And wait the new book! Please, write, write and write!

    Best wishes from Moscow,
